I’m really mad about the inappropriate dress my mom picked for my wedding – it’s almost as bad as wearing white

A BRIDE-TO-BE detailed her frustration with her mother’s dress choice for her special day.

She was very upset about how formfitting it was for her wedding, and it was almost as bad as wearing white.

Reddit user XanCai was originally okay with her mom’s dress until she saw it in person and deemed it age-inappropriate for the occasion.

She explained in a post that she is in her 50s and “the cut of the dress is something more like a 25-year-old would wear.”

DRESS DETAILS

The fitted green dress shows off her shoulders, has a modest halter neckline that accentuates her bust and features a side slit.

“If shoulders in the church is the issue, ask her to wear a Pashmina around her shoulders during the ceremony. Problem solved,” another Redditor recommended.

XanCai admitted that she was “really unhappy with it” and knew that if she saw her wearing that on her special day it would make her “irrationally mad.”

If someone else chose to wear a style like that, she would have them seated at “the dark fringe corners of the ballroom,” but she can’t do that to her mother.

The bride said she tried to show her similar looks, but her mother is “not budging” on her pick and thought they were for older women.

“She’s literally over 50 and having her midlife crisis at my wedding. It’s insane,” she added.

“It’s definitely not as horrible as the other ones she picked but I still hate it.”

If she wore the dress, Xancai told her that the photographer would not take photos of her at all.

Her mom simply countered that she would bring her own photographer, and others agreed with her decision.

“A 50-year-old woman who wants to look and feel sexy is not having a midlife crisis. The threat of banning the photographer tfrom takingpictures of her is manipulative and controlling,” a Redditor commented.

The original poster said she didn’t understand why her mother was “being so difficult” about the situation.

“I actually love this response. She’s not being difficult. Let’s just say someone else is,” another Reddit user chimed in.

SIMPLE SOLUTION

As a consolation, her mother-in-law offered to return her original dress and wear a similar green one so both parents could match for photos.

“I spoke with my mom and I apologized for being angry, and for all of the comments I made when I was mad. I told her I changed my mind, and go ahead and wear the dress,” she said.

Her mom’s reaction was unexpected.

She started “full-on laughing” and said she didn’t want to wear it anymore after finding a better dress at Nordstrom.

“Starting to feel like she weaponized this dress to get a rise out of me and it worked, I acted a fool,” XanCai said.

REDDIT REACTIONS

Several Redditors disagreed with the bride and made their opinions known.

“Just because she’s 50 doesn’t mean she has to dress matronly and cover everything from her neck to ankles. That dress is perfectly acceptable for a wedding and her age. She’s not being difficult,” one said.

“By your description, I was expecting a micro skirt and/or neckline down to her belly button but that dress you posted looks perfectly classy for a woman of her age. She’s in her 50s not 90s,” another wrote.

“I’d be thrilled if my mother or MIL (both mid-sixties) wore that dress to my wedding. It’s beautiful and appropriate for any age! Moms deserve to feel fashionable too,” a woman added.
