Gunman kills two school children and injures six in Pakistan

Police in Pakistan reported that two school children were killed and six others were wounded when a gunman opened fire on a van transporting the children to school in the Dheri Kot district of Attock city in Punjab province.

The attack occurred early Thursday morning. According to police and rescue service personnel, the driver of the van, who was among the injured, appears to have been the main target.

The gunman, who fled the scene, is believed to have had “personal enmity” with the driver. Authorities have initiated a manhunt for the suspect.

The victims who died were girls aged between 10 and 11, while the five others injured were children of a similar age.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, describing it as cruel and brutal. The U.N. children’s agency, UNICEF, also expressed shock and sadness, extending deep condolences to the families affected.

The shooting highlights a troubling increase in targeted attacks in Pakistan in recent months.

This incident underscores the growing insecurity and the escalation of violence, particularly against civilians and public figures. Militants have increasingly targeted police and government officials, contributing to a climate of fear and instability in the region.
