Former Spurs defender already thinks the club is set for disappointment this season

Tottenham Hotspur have their sights set on some lofty goals this season, but their former player, William Gallas, predicts they may be in for a disappointing campaign.

Top four is a minimum goal for Spurs

It goes without saying, the very least Spurs need to achieve this season is a top-four finish, after they narrowly missed out last term.

Most Tottenham fans would tell you they expect a trophy this year, too, especially given the Lilywhites are involved in three cup competitions this time around.

But, Gallas thinks that, despite some good signings this summer, the club will struggle to achieve its goals this season, and fourth place is the absolute best that can be hoped for.

He told Genting Casino: “I don’t want to burst the Tottenham fans bubble, but I’m not convinced that it will be a great season for the club. I don’t expect Tottenham to challenge for the Premier League title.

“Every season, it is always the same thing. They always come up short. I’m looking at the squad, and, yes, I like the signing of Dominic Solanke. They have signed a couple of talented young players, but other than that, it is the same team as last season.

“I haven’t seen anything that makes me think “this is a Tottenham team that is ready to fight for the title”. Maybe they can finish fourth. Maybe they will finish fifth again.”

Postecoglou is key

According to Gallas, Ange Postecoglou is the main factor determining how well Spurs do this season. He added: “I think Tottenham’s season will be determined by how Ange Postecoglou wants to play and how well the squad deals with the rigours of playing every Thursday and Sunday with the Europa League.

“The objective at the club will be to improve on last season’s fifth-place finish. It’s as simple as that. I’m not sure if they will be able to do that because I still have some concerns about how Ange Postecoglou sets his team up to play.

“Last season they surprised and startled some teams with the way they played with such a high line, I’m not sure if that will be as effective this season as managers know what to expect from Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

For me, fourth place and a trophy is the expectation this season. I don’t think that’s unrealistic at all. I’m not saying it will be easy, but we have to be pushing for some silverware this year.
