Local officials in India have reported that an explosion at a pharmaceutical factory in Andhra Pradesh has resulted in at least 16 deaths and 30 injuries.

According to Reuters, M. Deepika, the head of Andhra Pradesh police, stated that the incident occurred on Wednesday, August 21, at the “Scientia Advanced Science” factory in the Amakappali region of the state.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined.

Reports indicate that approximately 300 employees were at the factory during the blast, though many were outside for a meal break.

Local officials in Andhra Pradesh have warned that the death toll may increase as more information becomes available.

According to Vijaya Krishnan, a local official in Amakappali, the private pharmaceutical factory, covering an area of 168,000 square meters, has been operating in the region since 2019.

Fires at various locations in India annually result in numerous fatalities and hundreds of injuries. Previously, a fire at a hotel and restaurant in eastern India led to at least six deaths and over 20 injuries.

The incident underscores the critical need for enhanced safety measures and regulations in industrial settings to prevent such tragedies in the future.
