Friday shooting at Abbeville apartment complex leaves residents afraid

ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY)-- Some residents at the Stone Bridge apartment complex in Abbeville say they are afraid of living there after a shooting was reported there over the weekend.

Residents said they heard nearly 35 gunshots Friday night. Since then, residents have been having a hard time feeling safe.

"I don't feel safe. We don't feel safe here," said Stacy Jules, a resident at the apartment complex.

She said the sound of gunfire prompted her to get her grandchildren on the floor and crawl to a safe spot.

"We had to crawl to the restroom for safety," she said.

Jules said the sound was so terrifying that, to this day, she and her grandchildren are afraid to stay home. She said she would like to see an increase in security with more cameras, more personnel and more lighting.

"We have to walk on eggshells. You know, nobody should have to live like that. We need more officers on the ground. Something needs to be done. This is a community where people work, raise their kids," she said.

Bullets struck her and her neighbors' vehicles, she said, resulting in bullet holes in their vehicles and damaged windows. She believes the shooting was a targeted attack due to the amount of shots fired, she said.

Jules said officers with the Abbeville Police Department spoke with individuals and took reports.

"They say that they're going to work on it. They are working on it, and they're going to make sure that something be done," she said.

Jules said she just wants to be in a better environment, not only for her, but also her grandkids.
