Gay DNC speaker's defiant invitation to GOP met with huge applause

The Michigan attorney general delivered a message to Republicans on day three of the Democratic National Convention: anyone who comes for same-sex marriage will have to pry her wedding ring from her "cold, dead gay hand."

Dana Nessel, who is serving her second term as the state's top law enforcement official, applauded Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' record on same-sex marriage, noting the vice president “never shied away from a good fight."

Harris refused to support California’s ban on gay marriage while serving as the state's Attorney General in 2011. Nessel said her defiance meant a lot to Californians and same-sex couples.

“I've got a message for the Republicans and the justices of the United States Supreme Court," she told delegtes. "They can pry this wedding band from my cold, dead gay hand,” Nessel said, inciting a boom of applause.

Harris inspired Nessel, she said, as she fought a severely restrictive abortion law in Michigan following the overturning of Roe v. Wade two years ago.
