'I try not to say his name': Spike Lee delivers crude takedown of Trump on CNN

Filmmaker Spike Lee was at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, and chuckled to CNN as he recalled "side-eye" he got as an American when he traveled abroad after the 2016 election.

"Total strangers" were baffled by how Donald Trump became president, he said.

Lee told anchor Kaitlan Collins that this time he's working hard to make sure Vice President Kamala Harris is elected.

"She's going to be the first woman to be president of this United States of America, blended family ... Howard University, HBCU you know, so this is an amazing moment in history for these United States of America," he said.

He echoed the campaign's messaging, saying the country must move forward — not backward.

"We gotta advance. We gonna bring equity around this nation. We lead the world so, you know, I travel a lot of times outside the United States," he said. "When this guy was president, people — total strangers — would pull me aside and say, 'What the hell is going on?'"

When Collins confirmed he was referring to "Donald Trump," Lee said, "Yes. I try not to say his name.

"Total strangers on planes walking around all over the world saying, 'What is wrong with America? How did that guy get elected?' So those four years, the world was looking at us with side-eye. Like, 'WTF?'" he said with a laugh.

"And we know what that means," joking that he'd said the crude abbreviation on the air.
