Following the departure of former senior assistant coach, Chris Davies, this summer, Matt Wells was promoted to that role, while Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo joined Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff as assistant coaches.
Just two months into his spell at Tottenham, Montgomery has already been left mightily impressed by some of the young talent at Hotspur Way.
Bergvall and Gray, who both linked with the Spurs squad this summer, were two of the club’s best performers during pre-season, with both players backed to have big futures in the game.
They were handed their Tottenham debuts against Leicester City on Monday, coming off the bench in the latter stages of the encounter and producing impressive cameos.
Nick Montgomery is excited by the Spurs youngsters
Montgomery revealed that he played with Archie’s dad, Andy, at Sheffield United, and showered praise on the Leeds academy graduate.
The Tottenham coach told The Mirror (18/08, p61): “I’m loving working with the young players here and Ange has already put a lot of faith in them., The likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Mikey Moore are outstanding talents with so much potential.
“I played with Archie’s dad, Andy, for a few years at Sheffield United it’s great to be working with a young kid with so much ability and such a great attitude. It’s been nice to help Archie settle in and to coach him – he’s great and we’ve obviously got a connection with Andy being a former team-mate of mine.
“Archie can play anywhere. We were down on centre-backs in pre-season at Spurs, with Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin at the Euros and Cristian Romero at the Copa America. But Archie has played centre-half and been absolutely outstanding.
“For me, seeing what he did at Leeds and how he’s been playing at Tottenham has shown why he’s become one of the most sought-after teenagers in world football.”
Spurs Web Opinion
This is undoubtedly an exciting time to be a Tottenham fan. Not only do have several talented teenagers in our ranks but the likes of Destiny Udogie, Van de Ven and Pape Sarr also have a very high ceiling and will continue to get better over the coming years.
