Pundit picks out three Spurs players he thinks are not good enough for the team

Tottenham Hotspur’s squad should be in a better place than it was a year ago, as Ange Postecoglou has been able to add new players to his roster this summer. But, according to Simon Jordan, there are still players there that don’t deserve a place in the squad.

Spurs need new wingers

Out wide, Tottenham have plenty of options on both sides; Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski operate on the right, while Heung-min Son and Timo Werner play on the left.

This summer, we’ve seen Mikey Moore promoted to the first team, and new signing Wilson Odobert will also add depth to those areas.

However, Simon Jordan has suggested three of those players are not up to scratch and have been underperforming for the Lilywhites.

He told talkSPORT: “I mean, there are a few other players from Spurs that I don’t think are setting the place on fire.

“I don’t think Brennan Johnson is setting the place on fire, I don’t think Kulusevski sets the place on fire, and there are more concerns for me about Tottenham’s strength in depth, with Timo Werner in the mix, too. Is this side really going to compete?”

Players need to step up

Of those three players, the lack of form rather than quality has been clear to see over the last few months.

Johnson cost Spurs around £50m and registered five goals and ten assists last season, but there have been concerns about his end product and decision-making.

Werner has long been criticised for his finishing, while Kulusevski has struggled to put together a consistent run of performances, though he was impressive in pre-season for Spurs this summer.

I don’t think Werner is good enough, I’ll agree with that. I think Kulusevski, on his day, is a top player who offers plenty of creativity, but he really needs to stop relying on that cut inside onto his left foot as it’s become so predictable. I personally don’t quite get the criticism of Johnson, though; he’s got room to develop, he’s hard-working, and his numbers last season were very decent.
