The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) announced the Super Round schedule for the VI WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup following the conclusion of the 22-game Opening Round in Barranquilla and Cartagena de Indias, Colombia on Tuesday.
The U-15 Baseball World Cup moves into the next phase of the tournament with Colombia, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and Chinese Taipei set to compete head-to-head over the next three days, from 22 to 24 August, at Edgar Renteria Stadium.
Japan, Puerto Rico and Colombia advance as the respective first, second and third seeds out of Group A.
First-place Chinese Taipei, second-place Nicaragua and third-place Mexico qualified out of Group B.
Only results between the Super Round teams (including matches in the Opening Round) count toward the Super Round standings. As a result, Japan will enter the Super Round on top of the standings (2-0); followed by Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and Chinese Taipei (1-1); and Colombia (0-2).
In the first official day of Super Round action on Thursday, Puerto Rico will meet Nicaragua at 10:30 local time; Chinese Taipei will take on Japan at 3 pm, and Colombia will go head-to-head against Mexico at 7 pm.
The top two teams at the conclusion of the Super Round will compete For the Title of World Champion on Sunday. The Bronze Medal Game will start at 2 pm, while the World Championship Final is scheduled at 7 pm.
With Japan (two gold, two silver and two bronze), Chinese Taipei (one gold, five silver and four bronze) and Mexico (one bronze) the only Super Round teams who have previously medalled in the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup, there could be an opportunity for Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and Colombia to step on the podium for the first time as well having a new winner since 1991 when Chinese Taipei and Japan claimed the first three world champions title in 1991, 1990 and 1989 respectively.
Dominican Republic (2-0), Venezuela (2-0), Italy (1-1), Netherlands (1-1), Guam (0-2) and South Africa (0-2) will compete in the 7th-12th Placement Round and carry over their respective head-to-head wins/losses against each other from the Opening Round. The Placement Round will take place at 11 de Noviembre stadium in Cartagena de Indias.
