Sachin Tendulkar Joins Gavaskar’s Test Century Record Club Against Bangladesh

0

Here’s a look back at a momentous occasion when Sachin Tendulkar tied Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most Test hundreds. India and Bangladesh will play the first Test of a two-match series in Chennai starting on September 19.

Legends of Indian cricket, Tendulkar and Gavaskar both made important contributions in their different eras.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Gavaskar established the groundwork for the ascent of Indian cricket; in the 1990s and 2000s, Tendulkar continued this heritage by emerging as a global superstar. Generations of cricket players in India and around the world have been inspired by their batting records, consistency, and resilience under duress.

In Test cricket, Gavaskar became the first player to reach 10,000 runs. Before Tendulkar overtook him, he held the record for the most Test hundreds (34) for nearly twenty years.

Tendulkar tied Gavaskar’s record for most Test hundreds in the opening Test of the 2004 series against Bangladesh at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.

Anil Kumble broke Kapil Dev’s record of 434 wickets in the first Test of the two-match series, becoming India’s top wicket-taker. Meanwhile, Irfan Pathan made history on the third day of the first Test, taking his first 10 wicket haul at the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka in December 2004.

Bangladesh was bowled out for 184 runs in the first innings thanks to Pathan’s five wicket haul. From that point on, Sachin Tendulkar was the main attraction.

In addition to reaching his career-best Test score of 248*, Sachin achieved his 34th century in the format, matching Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most centuries in the format.

India scored 526 runs thanks to the 35 boundaries hammered by Tendulkar, who was dropped when he was on 28 and 47. He also added 164 runs with Ganguly (71) for the fourth wicket and put up a 133-run stand with Zaheer (75) for the final wicket.
