First responders honored for actions during July 4 Green Island fire
GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Some local first responders were recognized for rescuing a family from a burning home in Green Island in July. A total of five firefighters and police officers from Green Island and Watervliet received awards at Monday night's Green Island Village meeting.
The officers and a Good Samaritan helped the family escape, rescuing one woman who was trapped on the second floor.
The fire broke out on July 4. Large flames could be seen coming out of the roof. The community rallied around the family.
One neighbor started a lemonade stand and raised more than $100. A local bowling alley also hosted a fundraiser.
Investigators said the fire was started by a discarded cigarette.
