Sniper Elite’s next game revealed at Gamescom — and it doesn’t star its longtime hero

0

Sniper Elite has a new game coming — they just buried the reveal trailer in a Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live pre-show that few watched because the main show itself was two-hours of wall-to-wall trailers on its own.

But the next installment in Rebellion Entertainment’s love-it-or-hate-it cult classic is Sniper Elite: Resistance. Like its 2022 predecessor, Sniper Elite 5, this too is set in France, 1944. Those no-good bastard-ass Nazis have a secret weapon again that could turn the tide of the war and thwart the Allied liberation of Europe.

This time, it comes down not to longtime hero Karl Fairburne, but trusty comrade Harry Hawker of the British Army, who has been seen as a cooperative and multiplayer character going back to 2014’s Sniper Elite III. We’re assuming that’s his voice to go with his baller Russell Crowe good looks as he shoots a fascist in the ding-a-ling from 400 meters.

Rebellion says Sniper Elite: Resistance’s story runs parallel to the one in Sniper Elite 5, so this is why they’ve broken off from Fairburne as the lead character. Sniper Elite Resistance will bring back Invasion Mode, the X-ray kill cam, and its armory of authentic World War II weapons, with their customizations.

What else is in Sniper Elite: Resistance?

They can also expect an “epic standalone campaign” with new Propaganda missions when it launches sometime in 2025. No specific date yet, but when Sniper Elite: Resistance does arrive, it will be a day one release on Xbox Game Pass for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Sniper Elite Resistance is also coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s probably because there was a Sniper Elite: Resistance comic book that Rebellion published in 2018. Set in France (and preceding Sniper Elite 5 by a good 3 1/2 years) the book stars Fairburne instead of Hawker as he lends a rifle to the cause of the Free French.
