Neighbors monitor city and transit plans around new Metro-North stations

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Public transit keeps the region moving and a major project is underway to build new stations in the Bronx.

Amtrak and freight trains run along the tracks in the Bronx connecting Penn Station to the New Haven Line and Northeast Corridor.

By 2027, the Metro-North will stop at Hunts Point, Parkchester, Morris Park, and Co-Op City. The structures are already under construction.

This month, the city council approved development rezoning for the areas.

DaShawn Williams was out for a walk in her neighborhood by the Bruckner. "We've seen a lot of changes. You start to see a pocket of improvement," she said.

City council approved the area's rezoning proposal with 7,000 units of new affordable housing and nearly half a billion dollars in infrastructure improvements for parks, schools, streets, and sewers.

Peter Hamilton is with Parkchester Watch Group. He lives in the condos and is making sure he and his fellow current neighbors are part of the process.

"We are happy about projects but we do have concerns about quality-of-life issues. We don’t want luxury building here and it becomes a tale of two cities," he said.

New complexes will be built in place of garages at Parkchester North and South Condos. They could be up to 23 stories tall along Tremont Avenue across from the future station near White Plains Road.

Councilmember Amanda Farias secured half a million dollars for upgrades to the existing condo complex. Also, 10,000 feet of community-centered space will be added.

"These design features were informed by extensive community outreach in Parkchester, where my neighbors had the opportunity to discuss proposals with the Department of City Planning and local developers. I took that feedback on the types of community spaces needed, infrastructure enhancements desired, and more directly to the negotiating table,” said Majority Leader Farías.

The city also will study a pedestrian bridge over the Bronx River connecting Soundview and the Hunts Point Avenue Station.

Trains are set to arrive in 2027 with the development taking about a decade.

The councilmember’s office emphasized the area is not losing any parking.
