Red Sox Release Recently DFA’d Veteran First Baseman

A veteran Red Sox first baseman is now free to sign with any team.

Boston on Tuesday released veteran Dominic Smith four days after designating him for assignment. Smith, who Alex Cora called an "outstanding" infielder, was DFA'd to make room for Triston Casas on the active roster, and it was a difficult decision for the Red Sox.

Smith signed with the Red Sox last offseason, and despite his defensive miscues, he became a fan favorite for his clutch play and community work. The 29-year-old hit six home runs and recorded 34 RBIs off a 94 OPS+ in 83 games with Boston this season. Smith has 64 home runs and 259 RBIs in his career, which began with stints with the New York Mets and the Washington Nationals.

The eighth-year first baseman will get his choice of his next team as the Red Sox continue their push for an American League wild-card spot.
