Gamescom Opening Night Live is famous for announcing the biggest upcoming games for PlayStation, Xbox and Steam and this year is no different.

The show kicked off this year with a new entry in a series that hasn’t seen a release since 2019.

Opening up on publisher 2K Games’ logo, followed by developer Gearbox Software, fans immediately knew it was an announcement for the next Borderlands game.

Very little was revealed about Borderlands 4, as the trailer showed a mysterious purple planet.

We later saw the mask of Psycho, the character who graces the cover of every entry, held by a robot.

The trailer ended on the title Borderlands 4 with the release date of 2025.

It’s clear that this announcement was timed to coincide with the launch of the Borderlands movie which was released on August 9, 2024.

However, the film received very poor reviews with many people calling it a soulless cash grab.

In our Borderlands review we commented: “Borderlands is lifeless, and no amount of poorly crafted action sequences, manufactured unearned emotion, and cringeworthy attempts at witty quips can revive it.”

It seems Borderlands fans felt the same as one person commented: “I feel like the movie was supposed to draw more people into the series but did the reverse.”

Another said: “You just KNOW they were expecting the movie to be a success to promote this.”

Despite this most fans seem optimistic about the upcoming game, and are just excited to see the Borderlands games make a return.

The chat was filled with surprised and encouraging messages with things like “Let’s go” and “We’re so back”.

Not all of the feedback was positive. Some people commented that they wanted to see something different from Gearbox.

One comment reads: “Another Borderlands…  YAWN. Gearbox can’t make anything else.”

Despite this there was something that almost everyone was pleased about.

The Steam page for Borderlands 4 has already gone live, meaning that people will be able to play on PC from release.

We still don’t know what gameplay will be like, and it is still a long way before it’s launched.

We’ll have to wait a lot longer before we see gameplay footage so for now we can remain cautiously optimistic.
