Morning Briefing: Dedniel Núñez Could Rejoin Mets After Today’s Rehab Outing

Dedniel Núñez is scheduled to make a rehab appearance today, and Carlos Mendoza said it could be the fireballer’s only rehab appearance. Nuñez has been on the injured list since July 26 with a right pronator strain.

David Peterson allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out eight over seven innings, and Francisco Alvarez belted a 3-0 fastball from Seranthony Dominguez for a walk-off home run to beat the Orioles, 4-3. For Alvarez, it was his first homer since July 26 and the first walk-off RBI of his career. J.D. Martinez opened the scoring for the Mets with a two-run homer. With the Braves idle, the Mets are now 1.5 games back of them for the final Wild Card spot.
Jose Quintana (6-8, 4.26 ERA) will look to get back on track as he faces off against Dean Kremer (5-9, 4.48 ERA) in the second game of the series. Quintana has been tagged for 12 earned runs in 15 2/3 innings over his last three starts. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.
Brandon Nimmo was absent from Monday’s lineup, but Carlos Mendoza said the MRI on the outfielder’s shoulder came back clean and he is considered day-to-day. Nimmo departed Sunday’s game after his at-bat in the seventh inning with discomfort.
Liz Benn, the highest-ranking woman in the Mets’ baseball operations department, will leave the organization after the 2024 season. Benn has been with the organization since 2017 and is the seventh member of the baseball ops department who won’t be with the team next year.

Jacob deGrom will make a rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Thursday or Friday – the first of four he’s expected to make. Bruce Bochy said deGrom could be activated around September 10.
The Braves placed Austin Riley on the injured list with a right-hand fracture after he was hit by a pitch on Sunday. He is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks. Additionally, Atlanta activated Reynaldo López from the IL and sent right-hander Jimmy Herget to Triple-A Gwinnett.
The Marlins have recalled infielder Connor Norby and former Mets prospect Adam Oller from Triple-A Jacksonville. Additionally, they optioned righty George Soriano to Triple-A and designated Emmanuel Rivera for assignment.
