WATCH: Super blue moon rises over Portland Monday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The super blue sturgeon moon started to rise over the Portland- Vancouver area just after 8:30 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2024.

August's full moon is known as the sturgeon moon. It's also the third full moon of the summer season, making it a blue moon. Finally, it's a supermoon. NASA explains a supermoon as a full moon that "occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee.”

This is the first supermoon of four that will nearly take Portland to the end of the year.
