Who is Jonathan Bloomer? Morgan Stanley and Hiscox chairman missing after Bayesian superyacht sinks in Sicily
JONATHAN Bloomer is one of the people who went missing after a luxury yacht sank in a storm off Sicily.
Six people are still unaccounted for after the 183ft superyacht was struck by torrential rain and wind, causing swirling columns of air that formed waterspouts.
Who is Jonathan Bloomer?
Jonathan Bloomer is the chairman of Morgan Stanley bank and insurance company Hiscox.
He was born on March 23, 1954, and is married with three children.
He studied Physics at Imperial College in London in the 1970s.
Upon graduating, Bloomer got his first taste of the financial world with a role as a partner at accounting firm Arthur Anderson.
He stayed here for over two decades, before moving on to what would become one of the highest-profile roles of his career at insurance and investment company Prudential in 1995.
He began as Chief Financial Officer, before moving five years later into the CEO role.
But things ended on a sour note – Bloomer was ousted in a boardroom coup in 2005 after markets were hammered by both a dotcom crash and 9/11.
Investors weren’t happy that dividend payouts had been cut, and they criticised some of the decisions that were made during his time at the top of the company.
At the time, Bloomer described his sacking as “part of the ups and downs of corporate life”.
After his departure from Prudential, Bloomer headed up a number of financial companies including pensions buy-out firm Lucida and life insurance group Scottish Re.
In November 2016 he took up the role of International Chairman at Morgan Stanley.
The global firm has offices in 42 different countries, and specialises in investment banking and wealth management.
Since July 2023 Bloomer has also been chairman of insurance firm Hiscox.
At the time of his appointment, he said: “I am delighted to be joining Hiscox, it is a great company, with a distinctive culture and an exciting future.
“I look forward to being part of the team.”
The company announced Bloomer’s appointment and said he brought “a wealth of experience leading financial services organisations”.
On August 19, 2024, Bloomer was named as one of the people missing after a boat sank in Sicily following a storm.
They were sailing on the £166,000 per week Bayesian yacht in Palermo when it sunk.
Three other Brits, two Americans, and one Canadian are among the remaining six missing.
These include billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter, as well as Lynch’s attorney Christopher Morvillo.
The body of one victim who was sailing onboard the yacht has already been pulled from the Mediterranean.
