Feds: Iranian government behind hacking of Trump and Biden campaigns

0

Federal authorities have concluded that the Iranian government is behind hacking attacks against the campaigns of Trump and Joe Biden.

The FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in a statement to media outlets Monday that they have seen "increasingly aggressive Iranian activity during this election cycle, specifically involving influence operations targeting the American public and cyber operations targeting Presidential campaigns."

“The IC is confident that the Iranians have through social engineering and other efforts sought access to individuals with direct access to the Presidential campaigns of both political parties. Such activity, including thefts and disclosures, are intended to influence the U.S. election process."

The agencies said this approach is "not new" — "Iran and Russia have employed these tactics not only in the United States during this and prior federal election cycles but also in other countries around the world."

The statement comes a week after the FBI said it was probing hacking attempts suspected to be by Iran against the Trump and Biden campaigns in recent months.

Trump's campaign has said it was hacked after a "dossier on J.D. Vance" was leaked to news organizations from an anonymous account.

The FBI began investigating in June — warning Google and other companies of phishing attempts targeting the Biden campaign — believing Iran was responsible for efforts to steal data from the two presidential campaigns.

Trump ally Roger Stone has said a "couple" of his personal email accounts were compromised.
