THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- On Monday, crews installed new seating and shade structures at Lou Gehrig Plaza, centrally located in a busy part of the borough.

The neighborhood in the Bronx is filled with residents, local businesses, sports fans, and government workers.

The 161st Street Business Improvement District (BID) is bringing new vibrancy to the area.

"Over the next couple of months, we will have various events, activations, and more to celebrate this space within a space that shows that the Bronx can also develop community-driven public spaces just like any other borough in our great city," said Trey Jenkins is the BID's executive director.

Jenkins has big plans for the area and with local businesses and neighbors around Grand Concourse. "We want to have more people here gathering throughout the day."

Yankee Stadium is a draw and the Bronx Borough President’s office is bustling.

"Make sure to stop by the Court Deli Restaurant on the corner. Have a sandwich or grab one to go and enjoy on the plaza," said Peter Katsihtis.

Katsihtis has been with Court Deli Restaurant for decades. “It gives you the refreshing feeling, new and it’s good for business,” he added.

On Tuesday, the plaza will host a concert from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. More concerts and events are planned.

The group worked with the city and urban design studios including  Metropolitan Urban Design (MUD) WorkshopHabitat Workshop, and lighting designer Sighte Studio.
