Will ‘The Bear’ pull off a rare double play at the Emmys?

0

“The Bear” could make Emmys history this year by becoming only the seventh show in the TV awards’ history to win both Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Actress.

The FX show stars Jeremy Allen White as Chef Carmy who returns home to Chicago to manage his recently deceased brother’s sandwich shop. White won Best Comedy Actor last year for season one and is defending his title against rival nominees Matt Berry (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (“Reservation Dogs”), Steve Martin and Martin Short  (“Only Murders in the Building”). We’re predicting that White will win again. Short is his closest competitor but we’re confident that White will continue his award-winning year after already bagging a Golden Globe and SAG trophy.

Ayo Edebiri, who plays Carmy’s sous-chef Sydney, is nominated for Best Comedy Actress alongside Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) Kristen Wiig (“Palm Royale”), Maya Rudolph (“Loot”), and Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”). Smart and Brunson are both previous winners in this category. Brunson won last year while Smart prevailed in both 2021 and 2022.

While Smart has the edge this year for the critically acclaimed third season of “Hacks,” Edebiri is a strong contender too. She won Best Comedy Supporting Actress last year for “The Bear” so we know Emmy voters like her. Plus, she has already shown that she is able to make the step up to lead at awards ceremonies by winning Best Comedy Actress at the Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG awards earlier this year.

If Edebiri does manage to leapfrog Smart and join White on the Emmy podium this year, “The Bear” will have pulled off the rare fear of winning Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Actress. This is something that has only happened on eight occasions so far in Emmys history.*

*We are not including the 1965 ceremony, for which both of the lead comedy acting categories were titled Outstanding Individual Achievements in Entertainment – Actors and Performers and there were five winners in each category.

  • “Schitt’s Creek” — 2020 — Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara
  • “30 Rock” — 2008 — Alec Baldwin and Tiny Fey
  • “Soap” — 1980 — Burt Campbell and Cathryn Damon
  • “All in the Family” — 1978 — Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton
  • “All in the Family” — 1972 — Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton
  • “The Dick Van Dyke Show” — 1966 — Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore
  • “The Dick Van Dyke Show” — 1964 — Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore
  • “Father Knows Best” — 1958 — Robert Young and Jane Wyatt

“All in the Family” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” both accomplished this achievement twice, meaning only six shows have snagged this double of lead acting comedy wins at the Emmys. “The Bear” hopes to become the lucky seventh.
