New 'To the Stars' Kansas license plate now available

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) says a new standard license plate for the Sunflower State is available.

The KDOR issued a press release Monday, Aug. 19 on the new "To the Stars" license plate design which was chosen through a public vote late last year. This replaces the "Ad Astra" standard license plate design.

This new design features the Kansas Statehouse Dome within a cutout of the state against a background of blue, white and yellow. The new design will be used for all new plate issuances, along with replacements for any remaining embossed plates in Kansas.

Those who were issued a plate with the "Ad Astra" design as the replacement for their embossed plate will not be reissued another plate with the new design. The KDOR said any Kansan who has the "Ad Astra" design but wants the "To the Stars" design can visit the local county treasurer's office to transfer their registration to a plate with the new design.

Kansans rejected an earlier license plate choice unveiled in 2023, prompting Governor Laura Kelly to put a stop to the design which some claimed displayed 'Mizzou' colors. This prompted the state to issue multiple different designs for people to vote on while others came up with their own creative designs.

The KDOR also revealed a new personalized Kansas license plate on Aug. 12. This new design evokes the light of the scenic Flint Hills area.
