Ceremony of Roses
Ceremony of Roses is a minimalist office interior located in Culver City, California, designed by 22RE. Tasked with transforming a vaulted 1950s factory, 22RE and Never Far Studios aimed to create a contemporary office environment that contrasts moody colors with lush materials, establishing distinct areas within the space. Upon entering, visitors encounter a custom bench and welcome counter made of white oak, set on concrete flooring that merges natural and industrial elements—a theme carried throughout the office. A Lampampe lamp by Ingo Maurer, along with floral arrangements, adorns the front desk, setting the tone for the meticulously designed space. The first room visitors encounter is a huddle room, intended to spark conversations with some of the world’s leading musical artists.
This space evokes the feel of a 1970s sunken living room, featuring wall-to-wall carpeting, plush green mohair couches, and stainless steel-paneled walls. At its center, a sculptural aluminum coffee table by 22RE, inspired by Oscar Niemeyer, sits beneath a vintage Akari pendant lamp by Isamu Noguchi, which casts a warm glow over the room’s mix of blues, grays, and greens. The interplay of soft and hard, warm and cool materials echoes the overall design philosophy of the office. Beyond the foyer lies a large communal workspace, furnished with custom aluminum desks and cabinets paired with Eames Management chairs. The modern aesthetic of these workstations is deliberately contrasted with the raw concrete floor and the exposed wood rafters above.
Surrounding millwork, informed by French and Italian modernism, includes custom oak and walnut detailing and shelving. A dark-stained white oak structure anchors the open space, housing both a conference room and a listening room. The conference room centers around a six-seat burl wood table, complemented by Pierre Jeanneret chairs and maple burl-paneled walls. The space is further enhanced by a combination of dark-stained white oak, titanium travertine shelving, and a warm brown carpet. Adjacent to this is a listening room, designed to create an immersive audio experience. The room features dark brown carpeting, walnut paneling, and a custom velvet-upholstered sofa. A vintage floor-to-ceiling Akari lighting fixture provides soft illumination, while the room’s angled ceiling optimizes sound quality for those experiencing music on vinyl.
Surrounding the open desk area and central structure are executive suites with large windows framed by curtains, allowing sightlines into these rooms while maintaining the office’s sense of openness. Each suite is carefully appointed with a blend of 22RE millwork, custom desks, and vintage art and furniture. A kitchen, made from light-stained white oak and titanium travertine, is located past the office spaces. It features a built-in coffee bar and an aluminum dining table designed by 22RE, paired with matte chairs upholstered in blue pony hair from a local LA leather artisan. A vintage Akari pendant light hangs above the table, adding a touch of elegance. A vibrant blue bathroom, featuring floor-to-ceiling ceramic tiles from Japan, provides a surprising pop of color, rounding out the office’s design.
