Con Edison overcharging for gas in NYC: Rep. Torres

NEW YORK (PIX11) – You or your building may be paying too much for gas, according to a new report from U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres.

Torres claimed that Con Edison charges 100% more than National Grid for gas in some instances. A Bronx property, for example, would have to pay Con Edison $1.29 for delivery of each unit of gas, while a Brooklyn property would owe 54 cents to National Grid.

The report points out that the disparity especially harms underserved communities in the Bronx, Manhattan and parts of Queens.

Torres called on the Public Service Commission to investigate Con Edison.

PIX11 News reached out to Con Edison for a statement. The utility said,

"Energy delivery rates vary from utility to utility for many reasons, including the level of service, customers’ needs, the characteristics of the area and when new rates take effect. As we move from fossil fuels to clean energy, we are investing about $1 billion a year to keep our gas system safe. We replace 80 miles of cast-iron and steel main annually, conduct monthly leak patrols and are installing a first-of-its kind gas detector in customers’ homes and businesses, an enormous step forward for safety. We encourage reforms that reduce natural gas consumption and provide customers with clean energy alternatives."

The Public Service Commission recently approved a rate hike for National Grid. Long Island residential customers are expected to see gas bills rise by $33 starting next month, according to reporting from Newsday.

The Public Service Commission sets the rates for gas, not Con Edison, the spokesperson told PIX11 News.
