UN reports 2023 as the deadliest year for aid workers
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on World Humanitarian Day that 280 aid workers were killed across 33 countries in 2023.
On Monday, August 19, OCHA released a statement indicating that by August 7 of this year, 172 aid workers had already been killed globally.
OCHA highlighted that more than half of the aid worker fatalities in 2023 occurred in Gaza.
Additionally, Sudan, South Sudan, and Yemen were noted as countries with significant aid worker casualties in 2023.
The organization also warned that 2024 might prove even more dangerous for aid workers than the previous year.
Joyce Msuya, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, emphasized the need for powerful entities to address violations against civilians and end the impunity that enables these attacks.
OCHA’s statement also called for increased actions to prevent the killing of aid workers worldwide.
In a separate statement, OCHA described Afghanistan as one of the most dangerous countries for aid workers. The organization noted that over 35,000 employees from various agencies provide essential services in Afghanistan.
According to OCHA, in 2023, humanitarian aid reached 32.1 million people in Afghanistan, including food and livelihood support 26.3 million, healthcare services for 16.5 million, and drinking water services for 9.9 million individuals.
The stark realities highlighted by OCHA emphasize the grave risks humanitarian workers face worldwide and the urgent need for enhanced protection measures.
As conflicts and crises persist, the international community must strengthen efforts to safeguard those who dedicate their lives to aiding others.
The ongoing humanitarian missions in Afghanistan and elsewhere underscore the crucial role of aid workers and the significant impact of their contributions, even amidst difficult conditions. Continued support and vigilance are essential to ensure that these vital services can reach those in need while protecting the lives of those who provide them.
