A RARE style of Euro coin worth £1000s could be sitting in your holiday change.

Just 20,001 of the €2 coins were minted back in 2007 but some have now been sold upwards of £4000.

The coin, which depicts Grace Kelly, was specially commissioned in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the death of the Oscar winning actress.

When the Principality of Monaco’s Museum of Stamps and Coins first brought out the coin it was sold for €120 (£102) but has since exploded in value.

The rare piece of change topped a list of the rarest and most valuable €2 coins in 2021.

Its limited circulation was the smallest of all €2 commemorative coins between 2007 and 2014.

Just 20,000 were minted for sale along with a singular extra coin made especially for Prince Albert, Kelly’s son.

In 1956, a year after winning the Best Actress award for her role in The Country Girl, Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco, giving up her acting career in the process.

She went on to serve as Princess Consort of Monaco for 26 years until her untimely death following a car accident in 1982.

According to Florinus, the 8.5g coins were originally sold in commemorative boxes and features the initials of the coins designer “R.B.Baron” underneath Kelly’s hair.

One listing on eBay currently has the coin selling for almost £5000.

Potential coin buyers have been warned, however, of fakes.

One report stated that since the coin was never officially in circulation, it may be almost impossible to find in your change.

As such, if you seek a Grace Kelly coin for your own private collection, they recommend using a professional seller to avoid fake pieces.

They said: “The condition of the white sheath (the packaging of the Grace Kelly box) is crucial for resale in the future, so be sure to check if the packaging is damaged or worn.  

“Another peculiarity is that the piece was not issued with a certificate, so don’t be surprised of the coin doesn’t come with a certificate and be wary if you are given one.”
