Fire damages NE Portland fish-and-chips eatery

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A fish-and-chips restaurant was seriously damaged by a fire that appears to have started on the outside of the building, fire officials told KOIN 6 News.

Crews rushed to the 42nd Avenue Fish and Chips in the 5300 block of NE 42nd around 5 p.m. Sunday, Portland Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Jason Kelly said. The restaurant was open at the time and Kelly said the "waitress did a wonderful job" of alerting the customers and getting them all to safety.

No one was injured.

But Kelly said it was a "challenging fire" for crews. When they arrived, they found heavy fire with some power lines arcing and down. The multiple roof lines also presented a challenge for firefighters.

Crews remained at the scene for hours after the incident. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation and Kelly did not provide an estimate of damage.
