Student in custody after bringing weapon to high school in Sylmar, prompting lockdown

A high school in Sylmar went on lockdown after a student was found with a weapon on Friday morning.

Sylmar Charter High School went on lockdown at 10:15 a.m. after a disturbance on campus, according to a Los Angeles Unified School District spokesperson.

School police investigated and recovered a weapon from a student, who was taken into custody. Authorities did not immediately describe the weapon.

As a precaution, the school implemented a lockdown and contacted the Los Angeles Police Department, which determined there wasn’t a continuing threat.

The Los Angeles School Police Department will have additional patrol officers on campus, and LAUSD’s Region North will provide extra support staff to assist the school community. School officials will also provide mental health support for any students who need it.
