Paris Olympics 2024 Bronze Medallist Aman Sehrawat Rises To Career Best No 2 Position In World Ranking

Indian grappler Aman Sehrawat is going from strength-to-strength over the last couple of weeks in his international career. After the 22-year-old’s incredible run to winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, Aman has risen to career best second position in world wrestling rankings released by world body United World Wrestling (UWW) on Sunday.

In the wrestling 57kg category, Aman is currently in 2nd position with 51,600 points while Paris Olympics gold medallist Rei Higuchi of Japan leads the table with 59,000 points. Aman could have challenged for the gold medal but lost to eventual champion Higuchi in the semifinal.

Sehrawat was the only Indian wrestler to win a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The youngest male wrestler at the Paris Games, Aman lost his semifinal match to Higuchi via technical superiority. In earlier rounds, Aman had defeated North Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov 10-0 in the Round of 16 and achieved a 12-0 technical superiority win over Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakanov in the quarterfinals.

Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat has climbed to No. 2 position in UWW wrestling ranking.

Before the Paris Olympics, the Indian grapple who trains at New Delhi’s Chattrasal Stadium was ranked sixth in the world. At the Tokyo Olympics 2021, Ravi Kumar Dahiya had secured a silver medal in the same weight class. Aman had beaten Ravi at the national selection trials for the Olympic qualifiers, earning a spot at Paris Olympics 2024.

With Aman’s bronze medal, India has maintained its streak of winning a wrestling medal at every Olympic Games since 2008.

Meanwhile, after his playful ‘choorma banter’ with javelin star Neeraj Chopra in the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared another lighthearted moment with Paris Olympics bronze medal-winning wrestler Aman Sehrawat last week.

During an interaction with the Indian Olympic contingent at his residence on Independence Day, PM Modi congratulated Aman on becoming India’s youngest Olympic medallist. The Prime Minister, with a broad smile, then asked Aman if he had any of his favourite food after returning from Paris. The 22-year-old Haryana native smiled and replied, “I haven’t gone home yet, sir.”

PM Modi quipped, “Humein bolte, hum banwa dete kuch” (You should’ve told us, we could’ve made something for you!)

Aman, in his typical Haryanvi accent, responded with simplicity, “Ghar jake choorma toh khaayenge hi (Once I’m home, I’ll definitely have choorma).”
