Divide over DLP expulsion of two

0

Public reaction has been mixed on the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) decision to expel Dr Ronnie Yearwood and Steve Blackett.

Last Thursday night, the 69-year-old political party announced the immediate expulsion of Yearwood, who served as president, and Blackett, the general secretary.

Shane Scott, a loyal DLP supporter, said he was not pleased.

“At this point, the party needs to get its house in order. Both of these men are strong figures within the DLP and we need them, along with both the young and seasoned members, to rebuild and strengthen the party,” he told the Sunday Sun while in Westbury Road, St Michael, yesterday.

Scott emphasised the importance of internal unity: “If we keep airing our dirty laundry in public, we won’t achieve anything. Moving forward, we must get our house in order!”

At the same location, Monique Haynes, though not a fervent supporter of the party, had similar concerns. She suspected an ulterior motive behind the expulsion.

“I don’t believe they should have expelled those two. [Opposition Leader] Ralph Thorne, who left the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to join the DLP, then went back and returned to the DLP . . . . Those two men were the ones who brought him into the party. When the BLP wins the next election, he’ll be looking to run back to them.” (JC)
