‘Would have sold him already’ – Transfer chief issues statement on Spurs target
Aston Villa’s President of Football Operations Monchi has confirmed that rumoured Tottenham target Jacob Ramsey will remain at Villa Park, with the club expecting big things of the midfielder this season.
Tottenham will have to look elsewhere for midfielder
Tottenham reportedly identified Jacob Ramsey as one of their top midfield targets and failed with a move for him earlier this summer.
In fact, it was reported by The Athletic at the beginning of August that a deal for the 23-year-old was on the cards at the start of the window, only for Aston Villa to change their minds and decided to keep the player after they sold Omari Kellyman to Chelsea and Douglas Luiz to Juventus to help improve their FFP situation.
Various sources are continuing to report that the Lilywhites are still on the lookout for a number eight, with Ange Postecoglou thought to be intent on bringing an energetic midfielder through the door (GiveMeSport).
In fact, Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge even suggested to GiveMeSport a couple of days ago that Ramsey continues to be on Tottenham’s radar.
However, Monchi has now shut down any suggestions of the Villa academy graduate leaving, insisting that the midfielder is valued highly by Unai Emery.
When asked about the possibility of a late Ramsey sale, the Villa supremo told The Telegraph: “If we wanted to sell Jacob Ramsey, we would have sold him already because we had different offers from different clubs. But Unai has big confidence in him.
“I think that Jacob can continue to improve his level. Last season was difficult for him because of three injuries, but Unai thinks that with Jacob, Aston Villa is the best thing — he’s convinced 100 per cent that Jacob’s level will increase this season.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It seems like Tottenham have long since moved on from Ramsey and Gallagher to other alternatives. It is unclear who the Lilywhites’ top midfield target is now as Johan Lange and co clearly prefer operating in stealth.
