Pakistani officials have announced the fourteenth confirmed case of poliovirus in children in the Balochistan province of the country.

Pakistani media reported that a new polio case was identified on Sunday, August 11th, in the Qilla Saifullah region of Balochistan, a 20-month-old child.

According to an official from Pakistan’s National Institute of Health, the child succumbed to the disease after contracting polio.

This marks the fourteenth positive polio case recorded in Pakistan during this calendar year.

Earlier, Pakistani officials had reported positive polio cases in various regions of Balochistan, Punjab, Quetta, Peshawar, and Sindh.

Pakistani health authorities have consistently expressed concern over the rising number of polio cases in the country and have emphasized the need to strengthen vaccination campaigns for children.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries in the world where polio has not been eradicated and continues to claim the lives of children.

Both nations face significant challenges in their fight against polio, including issues related to access, misinformation, and conflict zones that hinder vaccination efforts.

Despite ongoing campaigns, the persistence of polio in these regions underscores the need for intensified international support and collaboration to eliminate the disease from these last remaining strongholds.
