That was too close for comfort with the Dbacks comeback.

Hello friends and welcome to the weekend series, with the Rays taking on the Diamondbacks. Ryne Nelson was on the mound for the Dbacks and Ryan Pepiot was up for the Rays, really helping to represent the diversity of spellings for Ryans everywhere.

In the first, Corbin Carroll reached first on a throwing error from Junior Caminero, then Jake McCarthy singled. A Joc Pederson single then scored Carroll. A double play got two outs, but then Lourdes Gurriel Jr singled to score McCarthy, putting the Dbacks up 2-0. The Rays went down in order in the home half.

Arizona went 1-2-3 in the top of the second. Caminero got a one-out single in the home half, but two outs followed, to leave him stranded.

The third was three-up, three-down for both sides.

Gurriel Jr. got a one-out single in the top of the fourth, followed by a two-out single from Eugenio Suarez. Gurriel got a bit too sure of himself trying to come home, and got tagged out to end the inning. The Rays got a two-out single from Josh Lowe in the bottom of the inning.

Geraldo Perdomo singled to start the fifth, but then got caught stealing second. The Rays finally got something going in the bottom of the inning as Dylan Carlson started things out with a solo home run. Three outs followed, but the Rays were on the board at last.

In the sixth, Pederson got a one-out walk. Josh Bell reached on a fielder’s choice, but thanks to some issues from Christopher Morel’s throwing, both baserunners stayed safe. Pepiot was done for the day, giving way to Kevin Kelly. A passed ball allowed both baserunners to advance, but Kelly got the final two outs of the inning. In the home half, Morel got a two-out single, but no runs scored.

In the seventh, Blaze Alexander got a two-out walk, but was stranded. Junior Caminero singled to start the home half. With one out in the inning, Nelson was out, replaced by A.J. Puk. Puk then got the remaining two outs in the inning.

Colin Poche was next out of the pen. With one out, he gave up a single to a pinch-hitting Randal Grichuk. One more out and he intentionally walked Gurriel, but then managed the final out of the inning. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Puk was replaced by another Ryan, Ryan Thompson, who gave up a single to Yandy Diaz. Morel then got a two-out single. A Josh Lowe single then brought two runs in, putting the Rays ahead.

The hits kept coming, as Lowe stole second, then Caminero walked. Dylan Carlson then singled to score Lowe. Carlson then stole second, but the Rays would have to settle for the go-ahead, as they headed into the ninth with a lead.

Pete Fairbanks came in for the ninth, and Eugenio Suarez got a leadoff single in the top of the ninth. Suarez advanced to second on defensive indifference, which ultimately didn’t matter because Corbin Carroll hit a home run to tie the game. Boo. Jake McCarthy singled and then stole second. Fairbanks got the final out, but the damage was done and the game was tied. In the home half Jonny Deluca got a one-out walk, then with two outs, Brandon Lowe hit a cute little blooper by second base and after a fielding error from McCarthy, Deluca hauled it to home to walk the game off.

Final: Rays 5, Diamondbacks 4
