Do I really need a Ratchet Block?

I recently got a 1982 sunfish with the original "mainsheet hook" but no ratchet block. I'm considering whether to install a ratchet block this winter. My concern is that it will get in the way when I have a passenger sitting in the front of the cockpit. I plan to sail often with visiting adults and kids.
