Columbus man arrested in triple stabbing has murder charge added after victim dies

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A man who was shot by police and named as a suspect in a case in which multiple people were stabbed has been arrested and charged additionally with murder.

Columbus resident Benjamin Kelch, 66, was named the suspect in a triple stabbing that took place on the Far East Side on the afternoon of June 25. Officers arrived at the 300 block of Hoskins Way, where three people had allegedly been injured by Kelch.

Kelch was reportedly approaching another man sitting on a porch before police arrested him. It was earlier reported that Kelch may have been shot by police, tased by police or suffered a knife wound of his own.

Recent court documents did not reveal the extent of Kelch’s injury, but police said one officer did fire their weapon. Kelch was hospitalized and stable.

One person, however, died as a result of a stab wound, and Kelch, who was originally charged with felonious assault, now has a murder charge added to his case. A witness who was also injured in the incident, identified Kelch as the suspect.

On Friday a Franklin County Municipal Court judge issued Kelch a $500,000 bond for the murder charge and a $100,000 bond for the felonious assault charge. He is next scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 23 for a preliminary hearing.
