Will Tropical Storm Ernesto hit NYC?

0

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Tropical Storm Ernesto unleashed heavy rain and windy gusts onto Bermuda Saturday, leaving at least 23,000 people without power, officials said.

The storm made landfall as a hurricane but later weakened to a tropical storm. The strongest winds from the storm were 70 mph and seven to nine inches of rain was expected to fall in Bermuda, according to the National Hurricane Center.

But where is Ernesto headed next? Will it come down on New York City?

Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected to stay away from the East Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. Despite the storm staying mostly offshore, dangerous rip currents are expected in the Atlantic Ocean.

Some New York City beaches closed on Sunday due to the life-threatening conditions caused by Ernesto. Ocean swells could reach 6 feet high in the Big Apple, according to NYC Parks.

Tropical Storm Ernesto could make landfall in Canada's Newfoundland by Monday night, meteorologists said.
