Both the Lille and Reims players were greatly distressed following the injury, with Reims’ Amadou Kone praying for the midfielder.

There was a lengthy delay of 34 minutes while he received treatment.

The Old Trafford academy product had eventually been taken off on a stretcher – to applause from all sides of the Stade de Reims.

Fans of both clubs chanted the name of the former Under-21 international.

And while the 23-year-old was being treated, Lille officials on the sidelines were clearly emotional.

But in a positive update, Gomes is now on the mend.

He posted a video to Instagram saying: “Just letting everyone know I’m OK. I’m back home. I’ve been looked after and I’m feeling good.

“I just want to thank all the medical staff at the club and all the medical staff at the hospital that looked after me. It was a crazy collision.

“These things happen in football but the most important thing is that I’m OK. We won, we got three points. So I just want to thank the fans also.”

Lille went on to win the game 2-0, with Reims’ Kone sent off for his foul on Gomes.

Lille manager Genesio revealed Gomes’ first words to him after the midfielder woke up in hospital.

Genesio said: “The latest news is rather reassuring, but it’s better to be careful.

“Angel asked if he was going to play [next] Saturday. It’s a good sign if he has a sense of humour. The match was secondary for me tonight.

“Angel was conscious when he was carried out. I know he spoke, he asked about the result, he showed he’s in good spirits, but I think we have to wait a bit.”

Genesio said the incident left him “very scared” for the player’s health.
