RIP LIAM ‘MOUSEY’ MUNROE
We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of former player Liam ‘Mousey’ Munroe, who passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Friday.
Born in Dublin in 1933, Liam had spells at Shamrock Rovers, where he was capped by Ireland, Ards, Bristol City and Scunthorpe United.
He joined Dundalk from Distillery in 1959 and went on to become a lethal striker for the Lilywhites.
His return of 19 goals in just 22 league games during the 1959/60 season, a strike rate of 86%, has only been bettered by Eddie Carroll, who hit 17 goals in 18 league games (94%) in 1928-29 and 16 goals from 18 (89%) a year earlier.
Liam’s 19-goal haul also topped the club’s previous best of 17 in a season, set by Carroll, and stood on its own for 54 years until Patrick Hoban matched the feat in 2014.
Liam’s tally included Iwo hat tricks and a record-equalling haul of four league goals in a single match, against Bohemians at Dalymount Park on November 29th, 1959.
Over the next two seasons, Liam managed another 20 goals, helping the club to the Leinster Senior Cup in 1960/61.
After three seasons at Oriel Park, he returned to Ards, where he scored 37 goals in just 38 appearances in 1957/58, but retired shortly after.
Liam emigrated to Canada in 1990 and also spent time in Florida before returning to Ireland last year.
May Liam rest in peace.
