Algerian gender-row Boxer Imane Khelif wins Paris Olympic Gold
Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer, clinched the Olympic gold in the women’s 66-kilogram category at the Paris Olympics by defeating her Chinese opponent, Yang Liu, in the final match.
Throughout the Paris Olympics, Khelif faced pressures due to controversies surrounding her gender.
Angela Carini, the Italian boxer in the 66-kilogram category of the Paris Summer Olympics, withdrew from her match against Imane Khelif midway through the competition because of doubts about Khelif’s gender. This incident became one of the most talked-about controversies of the Olympics.
In response to these allegations, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Paris Boxing Unit announced that Khelif was eligible to participate in the Olympics.
A few months prior, the International Boxing Federation had barred her from participating in the Women’s World Championships for unspecified reasons.
Following the incident, the Italian boxer apologized to Khelif for not shaking her hand, stating, “I’m sorry for the controversy. If I see Imane again, I will definitely hug her.”
In addition to these events, Afghan athletes also made their mark at the Paris Olympics. Despite facing numerous challenges back home, they showcased determination and talent on the international stage.
Their participation not only highlighted the resilience of Afghan athletes but also inspired many young sports enthusiasts in their homeland.
