Car AC the cause of Kouklia fire

Police were on Saturday investigating a 36-year-old man in Paphos for negligently causing a fire in Kouklia a day ago.

The fire occurred on Friday evening and burned an area near a desalination unit in Kouklia.

According to police, it is estimated that the fire was caused by a vehicle whose owner had parked with the intention of going swimming.

He reportedly admitted that although the fire appears to have started from the vehicle’s air conditioner, he reportedly left the scene without informing authorities about the fire.

The 36-year-old was charged in writing and is expected to appear in court at a later stage.

According to a post on Platform X by Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis, the fire that broke out around 2:30 pm Friday afternoon burned a hectare of dry grass, wild vegetation, reeds and trees.

Three fire engines and three aircraft (two helicopters and one plane) responded to extinguish the fire.
