Mets Shut Out 6-0 By Mariners In Series Opener

0

After every New York Mets (61-55) player recorded a hit in Thursday’s win over the Colorado Rockies, their offense was nowhere to be found in the series opener against the Seattle Mariners (61-56). New York managed only seven hits against Bryce Miller (9-7, 3.46 ERA) and the Seattle pitching staff as they ended up losing 6-0, marking the ninth time that the Mets have been shutout this year.

Even though the Mets put up three doubles as a team (Brandon Nimmo, J.D. Martinez, Mark Vientos), they could not find a way to get a big hit. They went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and the only member of the lineup to finish with multiple hits in this one was Jeff McNeil, who went 2-for-4.

Miller ended up going six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out six on 87 pithes (60 strikes). Seattle’s four pitchers combined for a total of nine strikeouts in the victory.

Jose Quintana (6-8, 4.10 ERA) got the start for the Mets. For the first six innings, he was able to keep them in the game. His only mistake up to that point was a two-run home run he allowed to Ryan Bliss in the bottom of the second.

At one point, Quintana had retired 14 Mariners in a row. Then, Seattle ended up breaking the game open in the seventh with a two-out rally. Leo Rivas came through with a two-run single to right field that doubled Seattle’s lead to 4-0, ending the left-hander’s night.

Quintana went 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits, walking two and striking out eight on 100 pitches (58 strikes). It is the third time this year that he struck out eight batters in a start (tied for a season-high). .

The inning continued with Adam Ottavino out of the bullpen, but he ran into his own troubles. After Rivas stole second, Víctor Robles drew a walk and the Mariners executed a double steal. Following a walk by Randy Arozarena, Cal Raleigh lined a two-run single to center that extended the lead to 6-0.

That hit snapped a streak of seven consecutive scoreless appearances for Ottavino. Coming into the night, he had also given up just one earned run in his nine outings since the All-Star break.

Alex Young got the ball in the eighth inning and ended up throwing a scoreless frame (one hit, one strikeout) before the Mets went out with a whimper in the ninth.
