Run DMC Day in NYC celebrates music legends, limited-edition design
NEW YORK (PIX11) – August 9th is known as Run DMC Day in New York City.
Fans gathered outside a clothing brand's flagship store in SoHo to celebrate and collect a limited-edition design.
The music legends from Hollis, Queens, are still winning over fans four decades after the release of their first album.
Messages spread on social media, including from Darryl McDaniels, one of the original members.
Reggie Brasby took the train from Philadelphia as a lifetime fan.
"My father used to tell me the music from your youth is music for life. I've seen them 80 times," Brasby said.
At Billionaire Boys Club, a shirt was unveiled, and DJs hosted shoppers and friends until evening. It was a collaboration with Terri, a brand started by TJ Mizell. He's the son of Jam Master Jay.
"I'm not surprised at all. It's crazy to see the longevity with music and fashion. They set trends going on to this day," Mizell said.
In 2023, Mayor Adams declared August 9th Run-DMC Day before a big concert and the 50th Anniversary of hip-hop celebrations. The legendary rapper’s first record is 40 years old this year.
Jason Mizell (also known as Jam Master Jay), Darryl McDaniels, and Joseph Simmons formed the legendary group in Hollis, Queens, in the early 1980s.
The music, sound, logo, and lyrics live on more than four decades later.
2025 will be a big year. They’re looking forward to opening the hip-hop museum in the South Bronx.
