Planned Parenthood to Close Three Clinics in New York

ALBANY (NEWS10) - Planned Parenthood of Greater New York (PPGNY) announced on Wednesday that it will close three of its clinics, including in the Capital Region, by this fall. The closures will affect health centers in Goshen (Orange County), Amsterdam, and Cobleskill.

PPGNY described the decision as “difficult but necessary” as the organization grapples with “compounding financial and political challenges.” The move aims to minimize financial losses and streamline operations amid growing economic pressures.

Chelly Hegan, President and CEO of Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood, highlighted the broader context of these challenges. “The way that Planned Parenthood’s are structured in New York state is that there are different affiliates around the state,” Hegan explained. “Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood provides services in Albany, Rensselaer, and Columbia County. Our centers in Troy, downtown Albany, and Hudson remain open.”

Hegan also noted the financial strains affecting the organization: “We are experiencing lower reimbursement rates and ever-increasing costs in the delivery of care. The gap between what it costs to deliver care and how much we get paid continues to widen. While philanthropy helps fill that gap, it is not a sustainable way to fund health care.”

Patients affected by the closures will still have access to care through nearby Planned Parenthood locations or PPGNY’s virtual health center. “Schenectady remains open and is relatively close for both of the affected communities. It has been the larger health center for quite some time,” Hegan added. “We will communicate openly with our patients about the transition plans and ensure they continue to receive the care they need.”
