Here are ideas on how to enjoy the summer on a budget with your mutt . . .

FIND A FRIEND: Use your canine to meet new people with similar interests.

You can find free or cheap events local to you at meetup.com.

A quick search brought up dog-friendly yoga sessions in London and walking weekends in Shakespeare country, as well as meets for French bulldogs and pomeranians among other breeds.

You can also try eventbrite.com to find what’s happening locally.

We found events to help manage dog reactivity, as well as dog portrait-painting sessions, in John Lewis.

PARK PLUS: Dogs are usually allowed into local green spaces or woodland at no cost.

But specialised pooch parks are springing up across the UK and feature paddling pools.

These can be great spaces to practise recall in a relaxed environment.

There is typically a charge for hiring out dog parks, but you may be able to club together with a friend or check for social meets to make it cheaper.

RIDE A BIKE: If you have an older dog or want to travel longer distances, your mutt may be happy to sit back and enjoy the ride on a cargo bike.

Some local councils offer free cargo bike loans — others, subsidised rates.

WOOF A PINT: Take a leisurely walk to a dog-friendly pub to enjoy lunch and a tipple or two.

You can quickly search for boozers that welcome pets, as well as cafes and restaurants, at dogfriendly.co.uk.

BEACH BREAK: Most dogs will love splashing and digging in sand — and there’s no cost.

Not all beaches will welcome pets but you can search for dog-friendly ones, by region, at thebeachguide.co.uk.
