Wobbly Cutlery

0

The Wobbly Cutlery, designed by Dutch designer Michael Schoner, is a project that marries minimalism with avant-garde aesthetics. This collection, crafted at Grymsdyke Farm—a research facility and experimental fabrication workshop in rural Buckinghamshire, UK—includes a spoon, fork, knife, salad spoons, and specialized marmalade and honey spoons.

Using stainless steel with a 50.8mm diameter tube and a 1.5mm wall thickness, Schoner shapes each piece with meticulous attention to detail. The spoons and forks are partially flattened and further shaped into concave forms using hardwood molds, creating a tactile experience for the user. The knives, distinct in their design, feature saw-tooth patterns provided by a third-party supplier.

The salad spoons, with flukes encompassing half the circumference of the pipe, are pried open and flattened, naturally finding their form and angle. The resulting silhouettes form a carousel of nested shapes, showcasing the thoughtful composition of each piece. The design process, although involving laser cutting, incorporates a significant amount of manual work, resulting in the intentionally wobbly forms that add a whimsical touch.

The marmalade and honey spoons are crafted from a smaller 25mm diameter tube. The honey spoon, in particular, exemplifies Schoner’s ingenuity by incorporating three revolutions around the pipe, maximizing the surface area for honey to adhere to and drip off slowly. Two honey spoons are entwined on a single pipe to maximize material efficiency. Both the marmalade and honey spoons feature a hook in their design, allowing them to hang over the edge of a jar or mug, enhancing their utility and ergonomic appeal.

Inspired by Fluxus, an art movement known for its experimental and interdisciplinary approaches, the Wobbly Cutlery project challenges conventional design norms. Schoner’s work is a testament to the beauty of minimalism, where simplicity and functionality coexist with artistic expression. This collection not only serves practical purposes but also invites users to engage with their everyday utensils in a more mindful and tactile manner.
