Over 1,500 children displaced by landslides in India
The international organization Save the Children announced on Wednesday that severe landslides in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala last week displaced more than 1,589 children.
The organization added that at least 385 people, including children, lost their lives due to this disaster.
Save the Children described the landslides in the Wayanad district in the Western Ghats mountains of India as one of the worst natural landslide disasters in the country’s history.
Sudarshan Suchi, the director of the organization in India, said, “In an instant, the landslides destroyed everything important to these children, from their homes and toys to their friends.”
The organization has announced that it is building 10 centers to support children in the areas affected by these incidents.
Save the Children also emphasized that the provision of initial psychological and social support to the children affected by the landslides has begun.
The devastating landslides in Kerala and the subsequent displacement of children highlight the urgent need for immediate relief efforts.
Save the Children’s initiatives to support and provide psychological assistance to affected children are crucial steps towards recovery. The widespread impact of natural disasters across Asia underscores the importance of coordinated regional and global responses to such calamities.
