For India and Chanu, it was another fourth-place finish in Paris, narrowly missing out on a medal with a combined total of 199kg.
In weightlifting, athletes compete in two main events: the snatch, where the barbell is lifted above the head in one fluid motion, and the clean-and-jerk, where the barbell is first brought to the chest (clean) and then pushed overhead with straight arms and locked elbows (jerk), held until a buzzer signals completion.
China’s Hou Zhihui claimed gold with a total of 206kg, Romania’s Mihaela Valentina Cambei secured silver with 205kg, and Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao won bronze with 200kg.
India has so far earned three bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, all in shooting events.
