SC to hear plea of students against Bombay HC verdict upholding ban on hijab, burqa in college
The Supreme Court will hear on August 9 a plea against the Bombay High Court's decision allowing a Mumbai college to ban hijab, burqa, and naqab. The plea cites difficulties faced by students from minority communities due to the dress code, especially with unit tests approaching. The Bombay High Court had earlier upheld the college's dress code, stating it aimed to maintain discipline and was within the institution's rights. Lawyer Abiha Zaidi, representing the petitioners, requested an urgent hearing, which Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud confirmed has been scheduled.
