Oklahoma students allegedly drugged on vacation in Cancun

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Oklahoma State University students Zara Hull and Jake Snider were on vacation with friends at a resort in Cancun, Mexico when things took a near-deadly turn.

They arrived Thursday, August 1. The next day, they were up early to go to the pool.

Zara and her friend Kaylie swam up to the bar to get water. Shortly after taking a few sips, they both collapsed.

"Within seconds, at the same time, our heads hit the pool bar," Zara Hull says.

Unsure of what happened, Jake took Zara back to their hotel room.

Zara adds, "I was like basically paralyzed in the corner of the room and I couldn't move."

At that point she says she was completely unconscious. She was then taken to nearby private hospital.

Jake never left her side and kept their parents updated on what was going on.

"It was scary. I was on the phone with parents, everybody, for the whole time I was there," Jake Snider says.

After paying thousands of dollars for Zara to be treated at the hospital and released, they were flown back to the United States.

Zara says doctors don't know what her and Kaylie were given.

"We think it was possibly synthetic fentanyl," says Hull.

News 4 spoke with Doctor Randall Herrin, the Director of OU Health's Edmond Emergency Department.

He says when ingesting something like Fentanyl, "The onset can be quite rapid and quite debilitating, so people won't necessarily have symptoms that tell them they're about to pass out."

Also adding, "If the suspicion is fentanyl, then Narcan if that's available," says Dr. Herrin.

Zara says she is glad to be back in the U.S., and thankful her and Kaylie made it back alive.

Her family has a GoFundMe page setup to help with medical expenses.
